SATURDAY 8th APRIL 2017 - SPRING-CLEANING & PLANTING (REPORT BY SALLY MORGAN)
Great morning volunteering in the sunshine with fellow members of Parc Nant Y Waun. We planted approximately 100 hedge row trees on the nature reserve and did a spot of Spring cleaning.
It is important to remember to care for our beautiful green spaces across Blaenau Gwent for future generations to enjoy. Volunteering or joining a community group is such a fantastic way of meeting new people as well as learning new skills.
Tasks can range from litter picking to bird box making, there is always something for everyone to enjoy.

An excellent morning’s work by the tree-planting team on Saturday. Many thanks and well done everyone – it was hard work. We’ve planted 200 yards of hedgerow (Blackthorn, Hawthorn, Guelder Rose, Hazel) between the parallel paths going west from Warwick Road and filled in gaps in the existing hedge, and started a new Willow copse by the Horsetail Pond.
We’ve just heard that the Green Flag assessment will be in the first week in May. Confirmed date and time to follow. We therefore plan to have a blitz on Bank Holiday Monday to collect the inevitable litter from the weekend and to cut the grass at the picnic area and outdoor classroom. Again, details to follow.
1st May 2017 LITTERPICK - REPORT BY NICHOLAS BESWICK
Five volunteers joined the May Day litter-pick to prepare the Parc for the Green Flag inspection on 4th May. The intrepid “fishermen” hauled in a shopping trolley from the Mustard Pond as well as recovering the remains of a buggy and a bicycle...plus the usual bags of litter.
3rd MAY 2017 - PREPARARATION FOR GREEN FLAG INSPECTION - REPORT BY NICHOLAS BESWICK
Many thanks to everyone who helped in preparing for our Green Flag inspection by Keep Wales Tidy’s Jake Castle on 4 May. After all the good work on Monday, we were horrified to find a mountain of rubbish, including a fridge, dumped by the garages on Wednesday.
So, a particular thank-you to the Blaenau Gwent CBC staff for clearing it all away before the inspection – very much appreciated.
Jake enjoyed his tour round the Parc, with lovely afternoon sunshine showing it off at its best. We look forward to seeing the Green Flag results announced in July and Jake’s report which will contribute to the planning of our future activities.
18th JULY 2017 - P.N.YW ACHIEVE COMMUNITY GREEN FLAG STATUS
It has been announced today by Keep Wales Tidy, that PNYW has achieved the award for the FIFTH consecutive year, Secretary Nicholas Beswick commented "This is a superb achievement that reflects the hard work that everyone puts in. "
Two other local community group winners were Beaufort Hill Ponds & Woodlands and Trevor Rowson Park
